Car hire in Madeira

A rental car is the most flexible way to explore Madeira: sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, quiet trailheads and the north coast on your own schedule. It is not essential, but it changes the trip.

Driving in Madeira

Traffic drives on the right. The main expressways are fast and full of tunnels, but the old mountain roads are narrow, steep and winding. Choose a car with enough power for the climbs, avoid the smallest engine categories if you will drive up to the mountains, and allow extra time.

Parking in central Funchal is limited; many hotels charge for parking, and public car parks are the easiest option.

Car or tours?

Many visitors combine both: a car for three or four days and guided tours for linear hikes, boat trips and activities such as canyoning. If you will not drive, a west or east island tour from our tours page covers the main highlights with pick-up.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an international driving permit in Madeira?

Not if your licence was issued in the EU. Other drivers should check the requirements with the rental company before travelling.

Where can I rent a car in Madeira?

Most rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall of Madeira airport, and some also deliver to hotels in Funchal.
