Many highlights can be visited with a rental car, but guided tours solve three real problems in Madeira: linear trails where you need transport back to the start, mountain roads that are tiring to drive, and fast-changing weather that local guides read better than any app.
Full-day island tours usually include pick-up in Funchal and nearby areas such as Caniço. Guided hikes are listed in our hiking guide, food and wine tours in Madeira wine and city tours in Funchal.
The west tour is the classic full day: Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão, the Paul da Serra plateau, Fanal forest and the lava pools of Porto Moniz. The east tour combines Pico do Arieiro, Ribeiro Frio, Santana's traditional houses and the cliffs of Ponta de São Lourenço. If you have two days, do both.
Most tours we list offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. Boat and mountain tours are usually cancelled or rescheduled by the operator if conditions are unsafe.
Most full-day and jeep tours include pick-up in Funchal and nearby areas. Check the meeting point on each tour before booking.
