Levada Nova and its waterfall (Ponta do Sol)

The Levada Nova runs high above the sunny south-west coast near Ponta do Sol. Its highlight is a waterfall that pours right over the path, which walkers pass behind or under, usually combined with the quieter Levada do Moinho in a loop.

The route

From the church at Lombada, the usual loop follows the Levada do Moinho into the valley and climbs to the Levada Nova, which runs about 200 m higher. The waterfall is reached shortly after joining the Levada Nova, and the return follows it back towards Lombada along open slopes with sea views.

Several sections of the Levada Nova are narrow with sheer drops, and there is a short tunnel near the waterfall. It is not recommended for people with a fear of heights; the Levada do Moinho on its own is a gentler alternative.

Tips

Parking at Lombada is limited, so arrive early. Bring a head torch and a light rain jacket for the waterfall section. Combine the walk with lunch in Ponta do Sol, one of the sunniest villages on the island. See also the Levada do Moinho page.
