Madeira itineraries: 3, 5 and 7 days

Madeira is small but slow to cross, so a good plan groups places by area and keeps a flexible day for the weather. These itineraries assume a base in Funchal.

Madeira in 3 days

Day 1: Funchal old town, the market and the cable car to Monte with the toboggan ride. Day 2: sunrise at Pico do Arieiro, then Santana and an easy levada such as Balcões. Day 3: the west coast with Cabo Girão, Fanal and Porto Moniz.

Madeira in 5 days

Add a full levada walk, such as 25 Fontes or Caldeirão Verde, and a day at sea with a whale-watching or sailing trip, ideally with an afternoon in Câmara de Lobos.

Madeira in 7 days

Add the eastern tip with the São Lourenço trail, a wine tasting in Funchal and either a canyoning day or a trip to Porto Santo. Keep one day free to move plans around the weather.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week in Madeira too long?

No. A week lets you see the main areas without rushing and leaves room for bad-weather days.
