At 1,818 m, Pico do Arieiro is Madeira's third-highest peak and the easiest to reach: a road climbs almost to the summit. On many mornings you watch the sun rise above a sea of clouds, with the jagged central mountains in front of you.
Arrive at least 30–40 minutes before sunrise to find parking and a spot at the viewpoint. Temperatures can be close to zero in winter and the wind is strong, so bring warm clothes. The drive from Funchal takes about 45–60 minutes. If you do not want to drive the mountain road in the dark, sunrise and jeep tours include pick-up from Funchal. Without a car, take the public bus: Horários do Funchal leaves the cable car station in Funchal's Old Town every day at 06:00 – reaching the summit at about 06:45, in time for sunrise all year – and at 13:30, and comes back down at 12:15 and 18:00 (19:00 on the summer timetable, from late March to late October). Tickets cost €3 each way, paid on board in cash or by card.
The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro links Pico do Arieiro with Pico Ruivo (1,862 m), the highest point of Madeira, along a ridge with steps, tunnels and steep drops. It reopened in 2026 after the 2024 wildfire: the first 1.2 km to the Pedra Rija viewpoint is two-way, and from there the route is one-way to Pico Ruivo, with a booked slot required. Read our complete PR1 hike guide for fees, transport and tips.
An easier way to reach Pico Ruivo is the PR1.2 from Achada do Teixeira, near Santana: a shorter paved path to the summit. See more routes in our Madeira hiking guide.
Yes, there is a road and a car park next to the summit, about 45–60 minutes from Funchal. There is also a daily public bus from Funchal (€3 each way).
Yes: the PR1 reopened in 2026 and has been open daily since 26 June 2026, with short closures for works or bad weather. The full route is one-way and needs a booked slot on SIMplifica (€10.50 for visitors over 12).
On a clear morning, yes: the view above the clouds is one of the highlights of Madeira. Check the mountain forecast or webcams the evening before, as the summit can be in cloud.
