How to use this calendar

The official dates come from the tourist entertainment calendar published by the Regional Government of Madeira in October 2026. A few traditional events that are not in it, such as the Monte feast or the Chestnut Festival, follow their usual date and are marked as such; others, like the MIUT ultra-trail or the rally, are still to be confirmed. Most of the programme in Funchal is free to watch, although grandstand seats for the big parades are sold separately.

For background on each festival, see our guide to festivals and events in Madeira. We update this page when the detailed programmes come out, usually a few weeks before each festival.

Carnival and the Flower Festival: book early

The two biggest festivals of the first half of the year fill Funchal's hotels. Carnival peaks with the allegorical parades on 5 and 6 February and the irreverent Trapalhão parade on 9 February; read our Carnival 2027 guide for routes, times and tips.

The Flower Festival runs from 29 April to 30 May, with the Wall of Hope on 1 May and the great flower parades on 2 and 16 May. Prices rise for those weekends, so book months ahead; our Flower Festival guide explains where to watch and our where to stay guide compares areas.

Summer: fireworks, food and wine

In June the Atlantic Festival brings concerts and street shows to Funchal and, on every Saturday, an international fireworks contest over the bay. July adds the SAL gastronomy festival and classic cars at Quinta Magnólia, while the island's rally usually takes over the roads at the end of July or the start of August.

From 22 August to 12 September the Wine Festival fills the city centre with stalls, folk music and tastings, with the live grape harvest in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos on 11 September. Our guide to Madeira wine and food tells you what to try.

Autumn and the festive season

At the end of September the Columbus Festival recreates the navigator's arrival on Porto Santo, and in early October the Madeira Nature Festival fills a week with outdoor activities. Around 1 November the village of Curral das Freiras celebrates its Chestnut Festival.

From 1 December Funchal switches on its Christmas lights, which stay on until early January, and the year ends with one of the world's best-known firework displays on 31 December. See our guides to Christmas in Madeira and New Year's Eve in Funchal.
