New Year's Eve in Madeira: the fireworks and Christmas season in Funchal

At midnight on 31 December, Funchal's whole natural amphitheatre lights up at once in one of the world's most famous New Year fireworks displays. Around it, Madeira celebrates a long Christmas season of lights, markets and local traditions. Here is what to expect in 2026/27 and how to plan it.

The New Year's Eve fireworks

The show starts at midnight and is launched simultaneously from the hills, the waterfront and the sea, so the bay of Funchal is surrounded by light on every side. In 2006 it entered the Guinness World Records as the largest fireworks display in the world, and it remains the island's biggest event of the year.

For the farewell to 2026 the regional government has planned 59 launch points: 27 on the hillsides of the amphitheatre, from Lido to Barreirinha (including São Martinho, the Botanical Garden and São Gonçalo), 25 on the waterfront between the port's Cais 8 and Praia Almirante Reis, 5 platforms at sea and 2 on Porto Santo, with a budget of more than €1.2 million. The previous show lasted about eight minutes.

The fireworks are free and need no ticket. They very rarely change because of the weather: at the end of 2025 the show went ahead at midnight despite an orange weather warning, although part of the entertainment programme was adjusted.

Where to watch the fireworks

On the waterfront. The promenade along Avenida do Mar and the area around the marina and the port put you right next to the launch points. It is free and the atmosphere is festive, but it gets very crowded: arrive well before 23:00.

From the hills. Hotel terraces and viewpoints above the city, such as Pico dos Barcelos, show the whole amphitheatre lit up at once, which many consider the best view. Roads around Funchal are busy that night, so plan how you will get there and back.

From the sea. A boat trip lets you watch the show from the middle of the bay, facing the city. These boat trips are among the first things to sell out for the season, so book them as soon as your dates are fixed and check the cancellation terms in case the sea is rough.

Christmas lights, markets and traditions

The festive season runs from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. The streets of central Funchal are decorated with lights, and a Christmas market sells fresh fruit, plants, Madeira wine, sugar-cane honey and seasonal food to the sound of live music.

The highlight before Christmas is Market Night on 23 December, when the Mercado dos Lavradores and the surrounding streets stay open late and fill with people, stalls and music. In the second half of December, parishes hold the Missas do Parto, dawn masses after which people gather outside the church to share food, drinks and songs.

Christmas tastes of carne de vinha d'alhos (pork marinated in wine and garlic), homemade liqueurs and the dark, spiced bolo de mel. On 5 January at 19:00, the Epiphany chants (Cantar dos Reis) are sung at Praça do Povo. For more local flavours, see food and wine in Madeira.

Booking and practical tips

New Year's Eve is the busiest week of the year in Madeira: hotels, flights and rental cars sell out and prices rise sharply, so book several months in advance. If you want a view of the bay, choose a hotel on the hills or a room facing the sea and ask about the hotel's own party.

On 31 December, several streets in central Funchal close to traffic in the evening and parking is very hard to find, so walk, take a taxi early or use public transport. The weather is mild but can be wet and windy: expect around 20 °C by day and 14 °C at night, and bring a waterproof jacket. See the weather in December and our calendar of festivals and events.
