CR7 Museum and Cristiano Ronaldo's Madeira

Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Funchal in 1985, and his home island celebrates him everywhere: a museum full of trophies, a bronze statue by the harbour, a hotel and even the airport carry his name. Here is how to visit the CR7 Museum and the other Ronaldo spots in Madeira.

Inside the CR7 Museum

The museum, created by Ronaldo himself, displays more than 150 trophies and awards from his career. The stars are his Ballon d'Or trophies and European Golden Boots, alongside shirts, medals, photographs, videos and interactive screens about the key moments of his career, from his first club in Funchal to Manchester, Madrid and the national team.

You can pose next to a life-size wax figure of Ronaldo and take augmented-reality photos that place you beside him. The whole space is accessible for people with reduced mobility. Since 2016 the museum has been on the waterfront, in the same building as the Pestana CR7 hotel.

Tickets and opening hours

Tickets cost about €5 per person and are sold at the door, so there is no need to book. The museum usually opens from 10:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday; published hours vary between sources, so check before you go on a Sunday or a public holiday. A visit takes 30 to 45 minutes, which makes it easy to fit into a day in Funchal.

The Ronaldo statue

Outside, in Praça CR7 on Avenida Sá Carneiro, a 3.4-metre bronze statue of Ronaldo in his free-kick stance has been one of Funchal's most photographed spots since it was unveiled in December 2014, in front of the player, his family and thousands of fans. It is free to visit at any time; come early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds, especially when cruise ships are in port.

Cristiano Ronaldo Airport and the famous bust

Since 2017 Madeira's airport has been called Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport. The bronze bust unveiled at the renaming ceremony became famous around the world for not looking much like him, and in 2018 it was replaced by a second, more realistic version by the same sculptor, Emanuel Santos. Look for it in the terminal on your way in or out.

Where Ronaldo grew up

Ronaldo was born in Funchal on 5 February 1985 and grew up in Quinta do Falcão, a modest neighbourhood in the parish of Santo António, on the hills above the city. He first played for the local club CF Andorinha, then for CD Nacional, before leaving for Sporting in Lisbon at the age of 12. These are residential areas, not attractions, so if you go, be discreet; a private Ronaldo tour is the easiest way to see them with context.

Combining it with Funchal

The museum and the statue are on the waterfront between the marina and the cruise terminal, a pleasant walk from the old town and the lower station of the cable car to Monte. See our Funchal guide for the rest of the city.
