Levada do Moinho (Ponta do Sol)

The Levada do Moinho is a quiet, mostly gentle levada that starts at the church of Lombada above Ponta do Sol and winds through farmland, woods and a small valley. It is often walked as a loop with the Levada Nova and its waterfall.

The route

The levada leaves Lombada and follows the contour of the hillside into a green valley (moinho means mill in Portuguese). Walking it there and back is an easy half-day. To see the waterfall, climb to the Levada Nova and return along it, which adds exposed sections.

Note that there are two walks called Levada do Moinho in Madeira: this page describes the one near Ponta do Sol, not the one in the north-west.

Tips

Parking next to the Lombada church is limited. The walk is sunny in the morning, so bring water and sun protection. For more short routes, see our easy levada walks.
