Levada do Rei (PR18)

The Levada do Rei is one of the most pleasant forest walks in the north of Madeira: a mostly level levada from Quebradas above São Jorge into the laurel forest, ending at the Ribeiro Bonito stream.

The route

The path starts among farmland and quickly enters the laurel forest, following the levada along the valley side with views over the north coast. At the end, the stream of Ribeiro Bonito falls in small cascades. The return is by the same path.

Tips

The north coast is often cloudy and damp, so bring a rain jacket even on sunny days in Funchal. The road to the start is narrow. Combine it with Santana, about 15 minutes away, or see more easy levada walks.

Frequently asked questions
