Levada dos Tornos

The Levada dos Tornos runs for tens of kilometres along the hills above Funchal. Its sections between Monte, Palheiro and Camacha are easy, mostly shaded walks with views over the city, and they can be reached by bus.

The best sections

The popular stretch from Monte towards Palheiro and Camacha passes eucalyptus and pine woods, small farms and viewpoints over Funchal bay, with a couple of short tunnels. Near Palheiro you can visit the Palheiro gardens, and Camacha is known for its wicker crafts.

Because the levada is long and crosses several roads, you can choose the length of your walk and return by bus or taxi.

Tips

Start in Monte after riding the Funchal cable car, and bring a torch for the tunnels. It is a good option for a day when the mountains are in cloud.
