Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8)

The eastern tip of Madeira looks like a different island: bare, wind-blown ridges of red, black and ochre volcanic rock between two seas. The PR8 crosses the peninsula to the Casa do Sardinha and the Pico do Furado viewpoint.

The route

The path follows the spine of the peninsula with steps, short climbs and fenced viewpoints over cliffs on both sides. At the end, the Casa do Sardinha is a small visitor centre with a palm grove, and a steep climb leads to the Pico do Furado viewpoint over the last islets.

Tips

There is no shade: go early, bring plenty of water, sun protection and a windproof layer. The car park fills quickly in high season. Boat and kayak tours also explore the peninsula from the sea; see our boat trips.
