East, south-west or west?

East tours climb to Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m), stop at Ribeiro Frio or Santo da Serra and often finish in Santana.

South-west tours combine the glass skywalk at Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, with vineyards, Câmara de Lobos and often a wine or poncha tasting.

West tours are full days to Fanal forest and the lava pools of Porto Moniz.

Tips before you book

Open-roof vehicles are great on clear days, but it is cold at altitude, so bring a jacket. Small-group tours (six or seven seats) stop more often for photos. If you only have one day, a west-coast 4x4 tour covers the most ground.

Frequently asked questions

Are jeep tours suitable for children?

Usually yes, with a minimum age set by each operator. Mountain roads are winding, so bring motion-sickness remedies if needed.

Half-day or full-day jeep tour?

A half-day tour (about four hours) covers either the east or the south-west. A full day is needed for Porto Moniz and Fanal in the north-west.
