Ponta do Pargo, Madeira's far west

At the western end of the island, Ponta do Pargo is a quiet rural parish with a lighthouse perched on high cliffs. It is one of the best places in Madeira to watch the sun set over the Atlantic.

The lighthouse and the cliffs

The lighthouse stands on cliffs more than 300 m above the sea, with views along the west and south coasts. Nearby viewpoints and cliff-top paths make it easy to find a quiet spot for the sunset.

The area is agricultural and peaceful, with small villages, orchards and a levada running across the plateau.

How to combine it

Combine Ponta do Pargo with Calheta and Ponta do Sol on the sunny south-west coast, or with Porto Moniz to the north. A car is the easiest way to get there.
