Câmara de Lobos

Ten minutes west of Funchal, Câmara de Lobos is a fishing village of colourful boats, steep lanes and small bars. Winston Churchill painted the bay in 1950, and it is often said to be the home of poncha.

What to do

Walk around the harbour, where fishermen still repair their boats, and climb to the viewpoint where Churchill set up his easel. Try a fresh poncha in one of the small bars and grilled fish by the water.

The village is the starting point for a visit to Cabo Girão, just above it, and for vineyard visits in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Learn more about local drinks in our Madeira wine and food guide.
