Canyoning and adventure in Madeira

Madeira's steep ravines make it one of Europe's best places for canyoning, and its clear Atlantic water is ideal for coasteering, kayaking and diving.

Canyoning levels explained

Level 1 canyons are designed for beginners and families: short abseils, natural slides and jumps that can be skipped. Level 2 adds higher abseils and longer days and suits fit people who are comfortable with heights. Operators provide wetsuits, helmets and harnesses; you only need trainers that can get wet.

On and under the water

Coasteering mixes cliff-side scrambling, swimming and optional jumps. Kayak tours around Ponta de São Lourenço or Calheta often include snorkelling, and the Garajau marine reserve near Funchal is one of the island's best spots for a first dive.
