São Vicente

São Vicente is a pretty village on the north coast, known for its volcanic caves, the small chapel built into a rock at the river mouth and its whitewashed old centre.

What to do

The São Vicente caves are lava tubes formed by an ancient eruption, visited on a guided tour together with a centre that explains Madeira's volcanic origins. In the village, look for the tiny chapel carved into a rock on the seafront and the old streets around the church.

From São Vicente, the coast road leads west past the Véu da Noiva waterfall viewpoint to Seixal and Porto Moniz. See also Madeira waterfalls.

Frequently asked questions

Are the São Vicente caves worth it?

Yes, especially on a rainy day: the visit is short, guided and explains how the island was formed.
