Landing at Madeira airport: the runway, the wind and what to expect

Madeira's airport is famous among pilots and passengers alike: a runway partly built on columns over the sea, mountains right behind it and strict wind limits that sometimes send flights elsewhere. Here is why it has that reputation, whether you should worry, and how to plan around the wind.

Why the landing is special

The airport sits on a narrow strip of coast at Santa Cruz, with steep mountains rising just behind it. When the trade winds hit those mountains they become gusty and change direction near the runway, creating crosswinds and wind shear that pilots have to manage in the last seconds before touching down.

The approach itself is unusual. On the most common runway, terrain makes a long straight-in approach impossible, so pilots fly a visual approach with a tight turn onto a very short final, close to the coast. Portugal's civil aviation authority classifies Madeira as a Category C airport: crews need specific training, including simulator sessions, before they are allowed to fly here.

The runway on columns over the sea

The original runway, opened in 1964, was only 1,600 m long. After a TAP Boeing 727 overran it in heavy rain in 1977, killing 131 people, it was gradually lengthened. The big extension came in 2000–2002: engineers built a platform over the sea supported by 180 concrete columns up to about 70 m tall, bringing the runway to 2,781 m. The structure won an international engineering award in 2004.

Since 2017 the airport has been named after Cristiano Ronaldo, who was born in Funchal; his bust in the terminal is a story of its own, told in our CR7 Museum guide.

Is Madeira airport dangerous?

No. Its reputation comes from how demanding the approach is, not from its safety record: there has been no fatal accident since 1977. The safety comes precisely from the strict rules – specially trained crews and mandatory wind limits, which in Madeira are binding rules rather than recommendations as at other Portuguese airports. When the wind exceeds them, planes simply do not land.

The landing can feel bumpy on a windy day, with a late turn and a firm touchdown, but this is normal for this airport. On a calm day it is one of the most scenic arrivals in Europe, with the cliffs and the coast right below the wing.

Diversions and cancellations

When the wind is above the limits, incoming flights hold for a while, divert or are cancelled. The usual alternatives are the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, Lisbon or the Canary Islands. Most days are unaffected, but some windy spells cause major disruption: at the start of July 2025 more than 100 flights were cancelled in a week of strong north-easterly winds, and in March and June 2026 there were days with dozens of cancellations and diversions.

Wind measurement has been improving: new wind radars were installed in 2024, and the aviation authority has been studying whether the limits can be revised on the basis of that data. As of October 2026, no change to the limits has been announced.

What to do if your flight is affected

Under EU rules, strong wind counts as an extraordinary circumstance, so airlines usually do not pay compensation. They must still offer you a choice between a refund and rerouting and, while you wait, care such as meals and, if needed, a hotel. If you are diverted to Porto Santo or elsewhere, the airline arranges the onward journey, which can take from a few hours to a day.

To protect your trip, avoid tight connections on the way home, do not book a long-haul flight or an important appointment for the same day you leave Madeira, and consider travel insurance that covers delays. Check your flight status before going to the airport on windy days.

When is the wind worst?

Problems are more frequent in winter storms, but they are not limited to winter: strong north-easterly trade winds can also disrupt flights in summer, as in July 2025. There is no completely safe month, so the best protection is flexibility. Frequently asked questions

Is Madeira airport dangerous?

No. The approach is demanding, but crews are specially trained and the wind limits are strict; there has been no fatal accident since 1977. If the wind is too strong, planes do not land.

Why is Madeira airport so difficult to land at?

Mountains right behind the runway turn the trade winds into gusts and crosswinds, and the approach requires a tight turn onto a short final close to the coast.

Where do flights divert if they cannot land in Madeira?

Usually to Porto Santo, Lisbon or the Canary Islands, depending on the airline and the fuel on board.

Do I get compensation if my Madeira flight is cancelled because of wind?

Usually not, because weather is an extraordinary circumstance under EU rules. You are still entitled to a refund or rerouting and to care such as meals and a hotel while you wait.

How long is the runway at Madeira airport?

2,781 metres, after the 2000–2002 extension built on 180 columns over the sea.
